2009/02/23 Splashing time at Portuguese Settlement

Residents of the Portuguese Settlement in Ujong Pasir in Malacca having fun splashing water on each other during the annual traditional water festival of Intrudo yesterday.

Intrudo, which means introduction or coming before in the local Cristao language (a 16th century Portuguese dialect still spoken at the settlement) is celebrated on the Sunday preceding Ash Wednesday.

The event traces its roots to the arrival of the Portuguese in 1511.
